This data set represents the boundaries of landmark and historic buildings and sites as defined in Chapter 20 of the City of Atlanta Zoning Ordinance (Part 16 of the City Code of Ordinances). That chapter defines a landmark building or site as "one of execptional importance to the city, state or nation and whose demolition would represent an irreparable loss to the city." An historic building or site is defined as "one that is close to a Landmark Building or Site in importance, but lacks some of the exceptional qualities of a Landmark." Both landmark and historic buildings and sites must meet three sets of criteria related to historic, architectural and cultural significance in order to be designated as such. Landmark and historic building and sites serve as zoning overlays in that they supplement existing zoning district regulations.
